The house, which is due for completion in August 2004, is a south facing semi-detached residence on a 234m2 block in Clovelly, NSW.
The house meets best practice in both urban design and environmental design within a complex and constrained site and brief.
The house, which has been designed to meet the very specific spatial and accessibility needs of the client, incorporates a range of innovations beyond the normal approaches of passive solar and environmental design (solar hot water, full insulation of internal and external walls and ceilings, solar pool heating, northern sun to living areas, shading from western sun, zoning, appropriate landscaping) including:
onsite rainwater storage for 9000 litres used for showers, baths and hand basin cold water
a full grey water treatment system with treated water used for the toilet and washing machine
thermal chimneys / solar space heating
provision for solar power generation
use of renewable materials (e.g. sustainable timber use)
use of zero voc / bio paints and floor oils
The house retains and reuses all water on site other than black water and is the first building in Australia to use a 'green wall, grey water treatment system.
The house is an exemplar of the possibilities for high quality environmental performance in difficult urban locations and has generated considerable interest from a broad range of organizations including Sydney Water, DIPNR and Randwick and Waverly Council.
