|Brighton: Longbeach apartments|
What is the most interesting project you are currently working on?
The Eliza apartments in Elizabeth Street, Sydney is very exciting as it is the first tall building ion Sydney with a parametric façade. The façade profile of each level corresponds to the different plan configuration and view potential of that level.
What do you enjoy about your role?
I am enjoying the ability to work across a number of projects, this makes possible a progression whereby each project is a development on the one before. The city creates new and unprecedented opportunities all the time for new expressions of design and urban interaction.
What was your inspiration behind the Moebius house in Dover Heights?
The unique shape of the Moebius house is a response to the site and environmental factors using digital parametric modelling software. This opens up possibilities for rapid fabrication and assembly techniques which we are exploring on projects such as this.
Are there plans for similar designed homes in the future?
We are currently commencing construction on the Leap House and Second Wave. We also have plans for similarly challenging houses in Curl Curl, Collaroy, Catlecrag and Double Bay.
What was your most challenging project overseas and why?
The Abu Dhabi Ladies Club presented unique opportunities due to the brief. It called for a facility just for women and included Women’s health facilities, small business training, childcare, sports and wedding facilities.
How do you think architecture will change over the next 10 years?
New advances in CAD-CAM building delivery and build ability processes mean that new software will make the impossible possible. This opens up the possibility of making more exciting design affordable and efficient in more cases.
Do you have any advice for young architects?
I remember when I was in high school I went to a careers day and saw a movie about Michael Graves. Someone from the audience asked if it was possible to do architecture like that in Australia? The presenter responded that no it wasn’t; clients and budgets would restrict you. I remember thinking to myself; ‘you’re a dick!’ You can do anything if you work hard enough and don’t give up.
List three things people might not know about you.
I was a child actor in movies.
Our pet bunny rabbit is slowly tunnelling under the moebius house undermining the foundations.
I hate small furry creatures.
