The SDS portfolio reflects this process - with experience in the design and/or construction of a number of iconic projects such as Starship Sydney Charter Cruise Vessel, White Rabbit Art Gallery and the Singapore National Art Gallery as well as a wide range of refined residential projects. Heritage projects such as the offices for the Seven Network in Sydney and the headquarters for the Australasian Performing Rights Association (APRA) display the Studio’s aptitude of amalgamating the old with the new. All projects within the Smart Design Studio portfolio reflect the diversity of experience and proven project delivery at all stages.
Smart Design Studio’s residential experience is broad and well publicised. From the multi-award winning development at 632 Bourke Street, to various private residential projects or residential developments such as Marine Apartments in Maroubra, Smart Design Studio has a definitive record in accepting often difficult design challenges and producing residential developments of exceptional quality and distinctive style.
Smart Design Studio, founded in 1997, has a reputation as a multi-disciplinary design studio of excellence. With a diverse range of design projects such as master-planning for new urban centres, many multi-unit residential developments, private residences and products such as the Flush door handle, Smart Design Studio is producing buildings, interiors, furniture and products that have an elegant simplicity that unites the projects together in spite of the difference in scale.
The SDS studio is run with four separate teams, each with its own area of specialisation. These teams share knowledge and work together at critical parts of the design process, allowing the expertise of one team to influence the designs of the others. For example, SDS interior design may assist the architectural teams at sketch design stages to develop good space planning and later in the documentation stage with the selection of finishes or lighting design. Conversely the architectural teams assist the interiors with structural knowledge, building regulation requirements and construction techniques. And the new designs developed by the SDS private residential team for say kitchens and bathrooms is transferred to The SDS multi-unit apartment designs after it has been constructed and proven to be both effective and efficient.
This cross-fertilization of ideas produces projects that are more innovative with higher quality results, whilst ensuring functionality and managing the risk of cost, quality and time over-runs.
Smart Design Studio has developed a substantial portfolio of interior design projects ranging from refurbishments of historic warehouse spaces for both APRA and the Seven Network, to the detailed fit-outs of high end residential dwellings - from the robust to the filigree.
SDS have tailored retail spaces to a range of sites, budgets and clients from Westfield Bondi Junction to ‘village’ shops. The SDS interior design projects rest on the design experience SDS apply to large scale architecture and exemplify the fascination SDS employ with the minutiae of detail. Light, texture and colour combines with a well-founded appreciation for the process of construction to create distinguished interior design projects.
Smart Design Studio has been involved in the conception and development of a growing product design portfolio. An interest and proactive involvement in the product market resulted in the Studio being a finalist in the Lockwood Handle Design Competition in 2007, with the design currently under development for market release.
Paralleled with this is the requirement for highly customised solutions for various projects, resulting in one-off installations such as the Pivot Table below. The mechanical operation of the table allows three pivot positions: it serves as a kitchen bench, dining table and work area. Other products which have been constructed, prototyped or incorporated into The SDS projects include the Starship Sydney Cruise Vessel, Treble Tap and Halo Light.
The work of Smart Design Studio has been highly awarded, including the Bourke Street Studio building which won the RAIA NSW Conservation/Adaptive Re-Use Award in 2006. Smart Design Studio achieved international acclaim in 2007 when shortlisted in the top 5 from over 100 international submissions to design the Singapore National Art Gallery. The SDS scheme for the East Darling Harbour Design Competition was also recognised in the top 20 from over 140 international submissions.
