The Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts will present a free lunchtime lecture on Tuesday 6 April that may be of interest to you and/or your colleagues. Information is as follows:
TALKABOUT: THE RISE OF SYDNEY’S DEPARTMENT STORE DYNASTIES
Historic Houses Trust curator, Michael Lech will examine – in an illustrated talk – the rise of Sydney’s 19th century department stores and the families that created them. Department stores like Anthony Hordern & Sons, Mark Foy’s and David Jones altered Sydney’s landscape physically through their landmark buildings, and culturally by attracting huge numbers to the city.

the implementation of innovative eco-sustainable solutions in our cities. Nominations are now open nationally.
Please forward to any individual or organisation who may be interested in entering the Awards this year. Nominations close 5pm, Friday 14 May. Please note that Judging is Saturday 15 May, entries must be received by UNAA Victoria before deadline.
Winners will be announced at the Awards Presentation Dinner at the Grand Hyatt Melbourne, Friday 4 June.

Nominations for the United Nations Association of Australia World Environment Day Awards 2010 ARE NOW OPEN. The World Environment Day Awards is a national awards program which recognises businesses, local governments, individuals, community organisations, schools and the media whose work serves to protect, manage or restore the environment.
In support of the International Year of Biodiversity 2010 and this year’s United Nations World Environment Day theme ‘Many Species, One Planet, One Future” a new Department of Sustainability and Environment Biodiversity Award has been launched that seeks to recognise the best company, organisation, local government, community or individual that has demonstrated innovation and excellence in the development and management of Australia’s biodiversity.
Award categories include:
• WSP Lincolne Scott Sustainability Leadership Award
Award for environmental, social and commercial best practice program for business.
• Szencorp Green Building Award
Best non-industrial building project that has demonstrated excellence in the implementation of innovative eco-sustainable solutions in our cities.
• Virgin Blue Business Awards
Best specific environmental initiative; and
Environmental best practice program.
• Department of Sustainability and Environment Biodiversity Award
Excellence in the development and management of Australia’s biodiversity, awarded in recognition of 2010 being the United Nations International Year of Biodiversity.
• Meeting the Greenhouse Challenge Award
Excellence in the implementation of innovative strategies for greenhouse gas reduction.
• Excellence in Marine and Coastal Management Award
Best company, organisation, community or individual that has demonstrated excellence in marine and coastal management.
• Excellence in Sustainable Water Management Award
Best company, organisation, individual or community group that has demonstrated excellence in water management.
• Education/Schools Award
Best school based project exploring environmental themes or issues.
• Community Award
Best community based environmental project or initiative.
• Individual Award
Outstanding service to the environment.
• Local Government Awards
Excellence in overall environmental management; and
Best specific environmental initiative.
• Media Award for Environmental Reporting
Excellence in environmental reporting.
